Two bishops from the United States will visit Wales to speak from their experience as women elected to the episcopate.

The Rt. Rev. Geralyn Wolf, 12th Bishop of Rhode Island, will be a keynote speaker at a conference, “Crossing the Threshold,” that marks the episcopate’s opening to women in the Church of Wales.

The Rt. Rev. Gayle E. Harris, Suffragan Bishop of Massachusetts, will preside and preach August 31 at St. Asaph Cathedral on her way to the conference.

Other speakers at “Crossing the Threshold,” set for September 4 at St. Michael’s College, Cardiff, are:

  • Jane Williams, who teaches Christian doctrine at St. Mellitus College, London
  • The Rev. Preb. Jane Tillier, West Midlands representative to the Church of England’s House of Bishops
  • The Rev. Jennifer A. Hurd, chair for the Methodist Church’s Synod Cymru
  • Baroness Eluned Morgan, shadow minister for Wales in the House of Lords
  • Gill Todd, chair of the working group on the representation of women in the Church of Wales

The Church in Wales approved legislation on women in the episcopate last September 12, 2013. A one-year delay in implementation gave Welsh bishops time to prepare a Code of Practice.
