The Most Rev. David Chillingworth, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, talks with G. Jeffrey MacDonald of The Living Church about the need for shared struggle among liberals and conservatives in the Church.
“Sometimes people of a liberal mindset don’t quite get the hurt which people of conservative Christian principles experience,” Chillingworth said. “They genuinely feel that what is being sacrificed is something which is absolutely at the heart of faith. It’s not just a matter of opinion.”
Chillingworth said he has to work to hear that — but that he aspires to move the church toward visible unity in Christ with functional diversity. “This is a decision which we must all make together, even if not everybody wants to be a part of it. This is about as difficult as it gets.”
