ILLUMINATION for the First Lesson

The First Sunday After Pentecost

Trinity Sunday, Year A, May 31, 2026

Genesis 1:1-2:4a

God creates humankind as the ultimate act of love in the story of creation. God blesses everything he creates and makes holy the day of rest.

A reading (lesson) from the Book of Genesis:

(Lead in with) RSV and NRSV: In the beginning…

Conclude with The word of the Lord or Here endeth, etc.

Revised Standard Version

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.  And God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. And God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” And God made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day. And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. And God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, a third day. And God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. And God made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of the heavens.” So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day. And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the cattle according to their kinds, and everything that creeps upon the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all his work which he had done in creation. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created.

New Revised Standard Version

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day. And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Revised Standard Version

[Examine yourselves, to see whether you are holding to your faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you? –unless indeed you fail to meet the test! I hope you will find out that we have not failed. But we pray God that you may not do wrong–not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. What we pray for is your improvement. I write this while I am away from you, in order that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of the authority which the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down.] Finally, brethren, farewell. Grace by Confessing Truth

“Within the three divine persons is the entire story of God’s interaction with humanity, from creation to the second coming. The lectionary reinforces this: we hear ‘in the beginning’ and ‘even to the end of the ages.’ It is not that the Trinity is in the whole Bible: rather, the whole Bible is in the Trinity.”

Fear, Wisdom, and Kindness

“Wondrous fear, the contemplation of Wisdom, and the enflaming warmth of kindness suggest the mystery of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, though this mystery would only be named after the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

Creation and Trinity

“We are, however, like Augustine, stirred from within, moved by the Holy Spirit who brings to remembrance all that Jesus taught and did, a Spirit that speaks to our spirit revealing that we are sons and daughters of God, united by adoption and grace to the eternal Son of the Father.”

Preaching Today

+

Jennifer Strawbridge: I Am with You Always

“We are being called by a God who calls all to live life to its fullest, and who sends out his followers not to dominate, but to welcome all—the pious, the doubters, the whole, the broken, the hopeless, the hopeful—into God’s embrace.”

Joshua Paetkau: The Fire Next Time

“This love creates us, and comprehends us, and, in Christ, invites us to live through the divine being of love — to make love perfect in ourselves through the practice of loving others.”

Carl Braaten: No Other Gospel

“By holding the Great Commission and the Great Commandment together, we will avoid the sin of separating our godward faith and our neighborly love, of separating our world of experience into public and private segments, leaving our church artificially grounded on the private shoreline.”

Classic Texts

Helmut Thielicke: The Key to Creation

“Only as we take seriously the words, ‘God said,’ and understand that here someone is actually speaking, that here a heart is expressing itself, will we have the key to creation in our hand.”

John Chrysostom: Fuel to Love

“Therefore is the kiss given, that it may be fuel to love, that it may kindle the disposition, that we may so love each other, as brothers, as children parents, as parents children, yes, rather even far more. For those things are a disposition implanted by nature, but these by spiritual grace.”

John Bunyan: The Oil of His Grace

“The Interpreter answered, ‘This is Christ, who continually, with the oil of his grace, maintains the work already begun in the heart; by the means of which, notwithstanding what the devil can do, the souls of his people prove gracious still.’”

Articles on the Holy Trinity

+

Jeff Bolt: The Trinity in the Old Testament

“The visibility of God was obvious in Torah where we find him walking with Adam and Eve in the garden, appearing as a man (or three) to Abraham, Jacob, and others. The Church fathers outright identify these theophanies with Jesus. What this implies is that our linear notions of time are somehow rearranged by the work of Christ.”

Elizabeth Anderson: Translating the Trinity

“While on the surface it might be easy to assume that words such as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have fixed meanings that are identical across languages, times, and cultures, the truth is that all words have a semantic range of meaning, and such semantic ranges may expand or contract or migrate over time and across different languages.”

John Alexander: Balanced View of the Trinity

“At one and the same time, we need to be in relationship with God the Father, who has created us and holds us accountable for obedience to his laws; God the Son, who draws near to call, forgive, reconcile, and befriend us; and God the Holy Spirit, who enters the deepest recesses of our souls to renew, transform, and re-create us from within.”

Boone Porter: The Dawn of All Things

“Did you ever think that this, among other things, is what the first chapter of the Book of Genesis is talking about? The dawn of all things is suggested, subtly and with restraint, in terms of dawn as we know it.”

Daniel Perrett: Recapturing Wonder at the Creation

“One Easter Vigil, a parishioner at my church rose by candlelight and recounted each day of the Creation as a true storyteller would, pausing in wonder before phrases like ‘He also made the stars.’ The sense of awed delight that she shared has remained with me ever since.”

Charlie Clauss: Creation Is Central

“This suggests that the answer to the question of why God created goes much deeper than we might normally think. God is not finished with whatever he is up to. Creation remains ‘in his heart,’ and has bearing on the answer to the question ‘who is the Gospel for’ — it has bearing on all Creation.”

Articles on the Image of God

+

Pamela Lewis: The Color of the Godhead

“The problem does not lie with Jesus depicted as white, per se, any more than with his depiction as Black, Asian, Indigenous, or as any other race or ethnicity. Rather, the problem is that white supremacy has determined that Jesus can only be white …. Diverse images of the godhead would underscore the idea of imago Dei, that we resemble God in spirit, as well as in all our physical manifestations.”

Mother Miriam: Missing Keys to the Imago Dei Mystery Box

“For once, we would not be guilty of an anthropomorphism for aspiring to be a ‘person,’ a human hypostasis within the perichoresis of the Three in One. Is this not the intent of our sanctification?”

Boone Porter: Looking Like God

“Our minds developed as they did in part at least because we have stereoscopic vision, because our mouths (unimpaired by fangs) can articulate complicated audible signals, and because our hands can manipulate what is around us. Perhaps this is suggested and poetically alluded to in the brief lines of Genesis.”
