ILLUMINATION for the First Lesson

Ascension Day, Year A, May 14, 2026

Acts 1:1-11

Jesus continues to teach the disciples until he ascends to heaven. He leaves them with the promise that they will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

A reading (lesson) from the Acts of the Apostles:

(Lead in with) RSV and NRSV: In the first book…

Conclude with The word of the Lord or Here endeth, etc.

Revised Standard Version

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me, for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

New Revised Standard Version

In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Ephesians 1:15-23

Paul prays that God will give disciples the wisdom to appreciate fully the power of God’s love, and the gift that he offers all followers through the Church, which is the Body of Christ.

A reading (lesson) from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians:

(Lead in with) RSV: Because I have heard of your faith…; NRSV: I have heard of your faith…

Conclude with The word of the Lord or Here endeth, etc.

Revised Standard Version

Because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power in us who believe, according to the working of his great might which he accomplished in Christ when he raised him from the dead and made him sit at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come; and he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

New Revised Standard Version

I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Jesus said to his disciples, “These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high.” Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven. And they returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God.

New Revised Standard Version

You are witnesses of these things. And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God.

Daniel 7:9-14

In the prophet’s vision, the Chosen One appears before God’s throne and is granted power and authority. This dream offers reassurance to the people of Israel that God is watching over them.

A reading (lesson) from the Book of the Prophet Daniel:

(Lead in with) RSV and NRSV: Daniel had a dream and visions…

Conclude with The word of the Lord or Here endeth, etc.

Revised Standard Version

Daniel had a dream and visions, and he wrote down the dream and said, “As I looked, thrones were placed and one that was ancient of days took his seat; his raiment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and came forth from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. I looked then because of the sound of the great words which the horn was speaking. And as I looked, the beast was slain, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire. As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

New Revised Standard Version

Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne, his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. I watched then because of the noise of the arrogant words that the horn was speaking. And as I watched, the beast was put to death, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire. As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed.

Ascension Day, Year A, May 14, 2026

Mark 16:9-15, 19-20

Jesus commands his followers to spread the gospel throughout the whole world. After Jesus is taken up to heaven, the Lord works through the disciples as they preach the good news.

A reading (lesson) from the Gospel according to Mark:

(Lead in with) RSV: Now when Jesus rose early…; NRSV: Now after Jesus rose early…

Revised Standard Version

Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. After this he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them. Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it.

Simon Cuff: Room in God Forever

“The Ascension is about humanity. It is, for once, about us. Or rather it’s about what God has done for us in Christ and what that means for our humanity. This is not about a journey through the skies, but God’s action in Christ.”

David Baumann: Present Everywhere

“In his body, Jesus could be present in only one place. After the Ascension, in another way, he could be present everywhere. Now there is no place where one can go where Jesus cannot be one’s intimate companion.”

 Anselm: Alas My Soul

“Alas, Lord, alas my soul. You have ascended, consoler of my life, and you have not said farewell to me. Going up on your way you blessed your own, but I did not say good-bye; ‘lifting up your hands’ you were received by a cloud into heaven, and I did not see it.”

Bernard of Clairvaux: The Reach of the Lord’s Mercies

“He sits at God’s right hand, holding mercy in his own right hand, judgement in his left; immovably he holds water in his right hand and fire in his left. He has strengthened his mercy for those who fear him as ‘heaven is high above earth,’ so that they can perceive the reach of the Lord’s mercies as greater than the distance between heaven and earth.”

Articles on Waiting

+

Andrew W. Harmon: A Neglected Virtue

“If Harned’s main hunch is right, that to be human is to wait and even to suffer, then it is through that waiting and suffering that we discern our capacities for acting freely and fully. This is not the way of the unaffected sage, Harned contends, but the way of Christ, who for the world’s sake patiently endured the road set before him, even to the point of death.”

Stewart Clem: Praying Off-Center with W. H. Auden

“I may not be able to solve the world’s problems, but I can pray. Yet I cannot pray unless I am attentive, and attentiveness requires openness to interruptions.”

Articles on Power

+

Esau McCaulley: Seeking the Holy Spirit

“As a child I never much liked the Holy Spirit because he would often descend upon our church at the most inopportune moments. I liked church, but I loved football, and the Spirit’s descent meant that our rather long service would extend for an extra half hour or so. This extra time meant I would miss the kickoff. And if the Spirit’s descent led to folks getting saved or sharing a testimony, there went the first half.”

Jonathan Turtle: What the Pentecostals Taught Me

“The Roman Catholic theologian Mary Healy says that to be baptized in the Holy Spirit is ‘to come alive to the grace received in sacramental baptism.’ … In other words, the grace received in baptism can (and must!) be relied upon continually. Each day we may (and should!) ask him to fill us up and flow through us, sustaining us as sap does a tree. What life and vigor can we have apart from this?”

Articles on Witness

Christin Ditchfield Lazo: You’re My Witnesses

“What keeps you from sharing your faith with your friends and neighbors? Before he ascended into heaven, Jesus said to spread the good news of the gospel everywhere. And this ‘Great Commission’ is for all who believe, not just those with the ‘gift of evangelism.’”

Zachary Guiliano: Teaching with Power and Love

“Some do not speak up. They have lost the confidence that God can change and guide the hearts of the Church’s members through conversation and persuasion. But surely the God who brings life from death, who quickens to repentance those ‘dead in trespasses and sins’ (Eph. 2:1), can move the hearts of his people.”
