A Panel of Inquiry faulted the church’s failure to pass on allegations about the serial abuser to an evangelical congregation he joined in 2014, and said that failures in implementing its safeguarding system leaves congregants at risk.
Most Anglican leaders reaffirmed their commitments to protecting the vulnerable, and some also spoke with gratitude for Welby’s leadership and assured him of their prayers.
The Most Rev. Thabo Makgoba, archbishop of Cape Town, posted a tribute on his blog to Hugh Masekela — regarded as South Africa’s “Father of Jazz” — who died Jan. 23 at age 78. Makgoba also noted the Anglican Church’s role in starting Masekela on his journey.
