There is much, much more to the late Middle Ages than the Black Death and the Battle of Agincourt. In particular, there is more to late medieval religion and devotion.
Whatever it is, it is anti-puritanical. It is against the simplistic modern legal precisions (both Catholic and Protestant) and their tendency to sever the good and the beautiful from the true.
Humility, unseeing, holds out its hand to be led, and of it is said, "Cursed be he who places a stumbling block in front of the blind man." Charity, seeing, chooses, as it were, to move less in its progress, in order not to desert humility.
