R.I. Clergy Change Churches

Three congregations in greater Providence, Rhode Island, said goodbye to their clergy teams on the same Sunday, and the next Sunday five clergy were welcomed to new parishes.

“We recognized that we were facing some major strategic staffing challenges on the West Side of Providence,” said Bishop Nicholas Knisely. “My staff and I began conversations with the congregational leadership and clergy about how we could most appropriately support the mission needs of each congregation. We wanted each congregation to decide how best to provide clergy leadership in its own context, recognizing that we all share the same mission to proclaim the Gospel effectively in our neighborhood.”

The congregations and clergy involved in the changes are:

• All Saints’ Memorial, Providence: The Rev. Judy Mitchell is moving to All Saints’ from St. James, North Providence, to serve as the priest-in-charge and will be a mentor to the Rev. Julie Hanavan, a new deacon who is a former parishioner of hers. They will work as a team at All Saints’ once Hanavan is ordained to the priesthood.
• St. Peter’s and St. Andrew’s, Providence: The Rev. Mary Alice Sullivan is moving to St. Peter’s and St. Andrew’s from All Saints’, where she served as a bridge priest. She will be assisted by the Rev. Jim Kelliher, a vocational deacon, who also is being reassigned from All Saints’. She will work with Sullivan and Kelliher during a time of transition, and then the congregation and its new clergy team will engage in a full restart, working with the bishop’s staff and the Congregational Development Commission.
• St. James, North Providence: The Rev. John Reardon has been appointed by the bishop as priest-in-charge of St. James. He was recently received into the Episcopal Church from the Roman Catholic Church, in which he was a member of a religious order.
