W. Buganda Elects 6th Bishop

The Rev. Henry Katumba-Tamale has been elected the sixth Bishop of West Buganda. He will be consecrated and enthroned on Aug. 28 at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako.

Katumba came to faith in Jesus in August 1984 during a commissioning service for a mission in the Diocese of Namirembe. He was ordained a deacon in 1986 and a priest in 1988 in Namirembe.

He serves as the bishop’s personal research and information assistant in the Diocese of Namirembe and priest of Kamuli Parish. From 2005 to 2015 he served Uganda Christian University as male warden and land and farm supervisor at UCU’s farm in Ntawo.

He has also served as a tutor at Uganda Martyrs’ Seminary, Namugongo, acting principal of Bishop Hannington Institute of Theology in Mombasa, Kenya, and a parish priest in various parishes in the Diocese of Namirembe.

The Church of Uganda’s House of Bishops elected him while in session June 1 in Namirembe.

Rev. Katumba is married to the Rev. Elizabeth Julia Katumba-Tamale and they have five children. He will succeed the Rt. Rev. Jackson Matovu, who has been caretaker bishop of the Diocese of West Buganda after the untimely death of the Rt. Rev. Godfrey Makumbi in June 2015.
