Preaching the Passion

The Episcopal Church’s webpage for ecumenical and interfaith relations has posted three plenary addresses on the theme of “Preaching the Just Word: New Perspectives on the Lections of Holy Week.”

The addresses are from a clergy study day held in February 2017 in the Diocese of New York. They address questions of how the Gospels describe Jewish leaders and the crowds that gathered for Jesus’ appearance before Pontius Pilate and his crucifixion.

One brief video features an introduction by the Rev. Curtis Hart, chairman of the diocese’s ecumenical and interfaith dialogue.

The three plenary addresses are:

  • “The Death of Jesus and Jesus’ Jewish Identity” by the Rev. Bruce D. Chilton, Bernard Iddings Bell Professor of Religion at Bard College
  • “Turn It and Turn It Again: Interpreting the Passion Narratives in Our Time” by Mary C. Boys, dean of academic affairs and Skinner and McAlpin Professor of Practical Theology at Union Theological Seminary
  • “Response from a Jewish Perspective” by Rabbi David Sandmel, director of interfaith affairs for the Anti Defamation League

The addresses also are available through Vimeo.
