Professors Anthony Baker and Scott Bader-Saye of Seminary of the Southwest will interview Baron Rowan Williams — 104th Archbishop of Canterbury and master at Magdalene College, Cambridge University — June 24.
“I just emailed him about Theology Studio, told him what we do, and requested an interview,” Baker said. “The focus of the interview with Dr. Williams will be the future of theological education and his reflections on the big ideas emerging in the field.”
Baker and Bader-Saye are hosts of Theology Studio, which “provides a forum for engaging voices and movements in the discipline of theology that seek to serve the church, engage tradition, resist commodification, and reclaim the primacy of the good, the true, and the beautiful.”
The interview will appear on Theology Studio at the end of the month.
Baker will present a paper, “Difficult Theosis: Shakespeare as Theological Humanist,” at a conference on The Soul later in June. Southwest alumni Tarah van De Wiele and Matthew Boulter also will present at the conference, which is presented by the University of Oxford’s Centre of Theology and Philosophy.
Baker holds the Clinton S. Quinn chair of Systematic Theology at Seminary of the Southwest. He is author of Diagonal Advance: Perfection in Christian Theology.
Bader-Saye is academic dean and holds the Helen and Everett H. Jones chair of Christian Ethics and Moral Theology at Southwest. His publications include Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear and Church and Israel After Christendom, as well as contributions to The Blackwell Companion to Christian Ethics and The Cambridge Companion to the Gospels. He is theologian in residence at St. Julian of Norwich Church, Austin, Texas.
Since founding Theology Studio in 2012, the professors have interviewed Sarah Coakley, Stanley Hauerwas, and Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, among others.
Matthew Townsend is a Halifax-based freelance journalist and volunteer advocate for survivors of sexual misconduct in Anglican settings. He served as editor of the Anglican Journal from 2019 to 2021 and communications missioner for the Anglican Diocese of Quebec from 2019 to 2022. He and his wife recently entered catechism class in the Orthodox Church in America.
