Ayala Harris Preaches on Jesus’ Presence

Julia Ayala Harris focused on General Convention’s theme of “Together in Love” June 23 as she preached on the day’s Gospel text of Mark 4:35-41.

“As we gather in this sacred space for the opening Eucharist, we reflect on the joys and sorrows, the hopes and the fears, that we carry with us today,” the president of the House of Deputies preached. “Our hearts are heavy with the weight of challenges, both as our church and our world.

“In the midst of these storms, it is easy to feel like the disciples,” she said, but Jesus is always present. “He speaks those same words to us today. He is Emmanuel, God with us.”

She added, “He has walked this path. He understands the storms we face. He is in the boat with us now. We are never alone.

“The Presiding Bishop is all about the power of love. He’s like a walking, talking Valentine,” she said, prompting laughter.

“It’s more than a catchy phrase,” she said of the Convention’s theme. “It strikes at the very heart of who we are as Episcopalians.

“It is this love that binds us together today. When we are weighed down by the burdens of illness and suffering, Jesus is there. When we are uncertain about our future about who will lead us, Jesus is there. When we feel discouraged by the empty pews and dwindling numbers, Jesus is there,” she said. “We are bound together by a love that is stronger than any storm.”

She challenged the assembly to “take the message of love beyond the walls of the convention center. Look for opportunities to put love into action, because together we can make a difference. Together we can be the hands and feet of Jesus.

“Whatever storms come our way, we are never alone. We have each other, we have the Holy Spirit, and we have the love of Jesus Christ.”

The Rt. Rev. Terry White, whose Diocese of Kentucky hosts this General Convention, celebrated the Eucharist.
