New: 3/24 Issue Online

The March 24 Holy Week issue of The Living Church is available online to registered subscribers

In our cover story, Dennis Raverty features two paintings of traditional Holy Week images by Douglas Blanchard, a contemporary New York artist. Blanchard works in a highly realistic style, and revives earlier tradition of setting biblical scenes in present-day settings. The cover image, Jesus is Dead, is his recasting of the Pietà in a city morgue.

In the news section, Kirk Petersen outlines new protocols for publicizing Title IV cases that involve bishops, an effort by the presiding bishop to increase transparency. Jesse Masai reports from a celebration of Africa’s first six female bishops in Kenya, while Jeffrey Smith remembers a charismatic and spiritually grounded cathedral dean.

Kirk offers a tribute to John Schuessler, TLC’s faithful managing editor, who moved on at the end of 2023 after 38 years of service. Ryan Flanigan profiles Leila Way, songwriter-in residence at Resurrection South Austin, whose new album describes her spiritual journey from loneliness to healing and spiritual friendship. Neva Rae Fox shines the spotlight on a Washington, D.C., parish that partly attributes its recent growth to holding events outside and talking about family life.

All this plus a word of thanks to our generous contributors, as well as more news, features, book reviews, People & Places, and Sunday’s Readings, from an independent voice serving the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion since 1878. Consider subscribing today.
