The Diocese of Maryland will welcome the Rt. Rev. Chilton R. Knudsen as assisting bishop with an Evensong service. The service, consisting of hymns, readings, and a sermon by Bishop Knudsen, begins at 4 p.m. Sunday at Cathedral of the Incarnation, 4 East University Parkway in Baltimore.
The Rt. Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton, Bishop of Maryland, and the Very Rev. Rob Boulter, acting dean of the cathedral, will lead the service. The diocese will provide a live stream of the service under the “What’s New” section of its website.
“Our diocese needed a special leader and I believe the Holy Spirit has sent that leader in the person of Bishop Knudsen,” Bishop Sutton said. “Chilton has extraordinary gifts of leadership in diocese management and conflict resolution, as well as in issues of recovery. We’ll be blessed by her time with us.”
Since retiring as Bishop of Maine in 2008, Knudsen has served as assistant bishop in the Diocese of Long Island and the Diocese of New York. Typically the term of an assisting bishop is 18 months to two years, depending on the diocese.
“I’m grateful to Bishop Sutton and the standing committee for their faith in me,” Bishop Knudsen said. “I’m here to do whatever God calls me to do as I assist Bishop Sutton and the lay leadership of this diocese,” Knudsen said.
Bishop Knudsen is coauthor of So You Think You Don’t Know One?: Addiction and Recovery in Clergy and Congregations (Morehouse) and a booklet, “Depending on the Grace of God: A Spiritual Journey through the Twelve Steps” (Forward Movement).
