Festival Honors C.S. Lewis

St. Thomas in Whitemarsh, Pa., will be the host parish March 22-23 for a festival celebrating the life and work of C.S. Lewis.

Lewis scholar Michael Ward will deliver a keynote address, “The Heavens are Telling the Glory of God: C.S. Lewis, Narnia, and the Planets”; lead a panel discussion, “What Does Lewis Have to Offer the Church and the World Today?”; and teach a faith forum at St. Thomas, “What Is a Christian to Make of Pain, Suffering, and Grief”?

Other speakers and workshop leaders include:

  • Steven Boyer of Templeton Honors College on “Hierarchy in Lewis”;
  • Language teacher Brian Burke [YouTube] on “Friendship”;
  • James Como on “The Geniuses of C.S. Lewis”;
  • David and Crystal Downing of the Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College, who will present a play, The Sound and Savor of Words: Letters by and between C.S. Lewis and Dorothy Sayers, and lead a workshop, “Practicing the Presence of God”;
  • Stewart Goetz, Professor of Philosophy at Ursinus College and the author of A Philosophical Walking Tour with C.S. Lewis (2014), on “The Meaning of Life and Death to Self”;
  • The Rev. Canon Patricia Lyons, canon for evangelism in the Diocese of Washington, on “The Narnia Series”
  • Lex McMillan, author of C.S. Lewis as Spiritual Autobiographer: A Study in the Sacramental Imagination, on “The Man Behind Shadowlands”;
  • David J. Theroux of the C.S. Lewis Society of Southern California on “C.S. Lewis on Mere Liberty and the Evils of Statism.”
