A Los Angeles hospital founded with nine beds by an Episcopal nun in 1885 is being acquired by a regional hospital group, and the local bishop is happy about the transaction.
The 408-bed Good Samaritan Hospital in downtown Los Angeles will become a part of PIH Health, a Whittier, California-based company that owns two hospitals and a portfolio of smaller treatment centers and medical office buildings. No purchase price was disclosed.
“Proud as the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles is and always will be of the Episcopal roots of Good Samaritan Hospital, I fully support the step the board of trustees took today to secure its future by affiliating with PIH Health,” said the Rt. Rev. John Harvey Taylor, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and a member of the hospital’s board. The diocese has no ownership stake in the hospital, but local bishops have served on the board since inception.
“Our conversations with the PIH Spiritual Care Services and Clinical Pastoral Education departments revealed a consonance of values when it comes to the spiritual care of all patients, their families, and staff without regard to religious affiliation,” Taylor said.
