The Office of Black Ministries will sponsor a public recognition event in Washington, D.C., Nov. 10 for its affiliated Historically Black Universities of St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina.
“The purpose of the recognition event is to highlight the Episcopal Church’s ongoing commitment to higher education, especially through its support of these two institutions,” said the Rev. Angela Ifill, the Episcopal Church’s missioner for black ministries.
Music will kick off the day at 9 a.m. at St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square, featuring the combined choirs of St. Augustine’s and Voorhees.
Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry will present the keynote address, followed by a question and answer session. In the afternoon, panels of university presidents and students will discuss their experiences at the schools.
“The remarks of both presidents and student representatives will serve to share with the public the continuing value of these and other Historically Black Colleges and Universities in their particular communities, and as they educate and prepare young adults to take their rightful places in the leadership of society and the world,” Ifill said.
