Bruno Sanctions Stand

The Bishop of Los Angeles has lost his appeal of sanctions imposed on him for attempting for the second time to sell a Newport Beach church. The Rt. Rev. J. Jon Bruno’s first attempt to sell St. James the Great Church is at the center of a Title IV disciplinary process.

In a three-page order released July 8, the Disciplinary Board for Bishops rejected Bruno’s bid to overrule an order from the five-member Disciplinary Hearing Panel, which on June 17 ordered Bruno not to sell the property without prior consent of the panel.

“By contracting to sell the St. James property while the conflicts involving that property were still under review and consideration by the Hearing Panel, Respondent disrupted and interfered with the integrity of the process of the Title IV proceeding.  Respondent’s actions undermined what the canons intend to be a process of reconciliation,” the Disciplinary Board said in an order signed by the Rt. Rev. Catherine M. Waynick, the retired Bishop of Indianapolis, board president.
