The Rt. Rev. Sean Rowe, Bishop of Northwestern Pennsylvania, writes in the Erie Times-News about the Penn State scandal in nearby State College:
[W]e often cling to the materialistic fallacy that we can’t do good work — God’s work — without extravagant financial resources. This leads to the logical but twisted conclusion that in protecting ourselves against the claims of abuse victims, we are preserving our institutional capacity to do good — and therefore doing the right thing.
Telling the truth about something as heinous as the sexual violation of a child casts a retrospective shadow on the reputations of every individual who knew about the crime and didn’t stop it or report it to the police.
