Bonhoeffer Meets Grammy

Please email comments to letters@livingchurch.org.

Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral has announced on Facebook that its music director is a Grammy nominee:

Congratulations to our own Director of Music, Dr. Thomas Lloyd, for his 2017 Grammy nomination in the category of Best Choral Performance for his composition, Bonhoeffer. The piece has a long association with us. The piece had its premiere performance at the Cathedral in 2013 and another performance here in 2015. Only 5 performances from around the world were nominated for this Grammy for 2017.

See Lloyd’s website for more information. A CD of Bonhoeffer is available from the website for The Crossing, a professional chamber choir.

What follows, therefore, is not an attempt to negate positive assessments, but rather an effort to add sober realism to what sometimes becomes runaway triumphalism.
