Bishops-in-Waiting for Chile

The College of Bishops of the Anglican Church of South America has ratified the election of two priests who will serve as diocesan bishops if the proposed Anglican Church of Chile becomes a province. Iglesia Anglicana de Chile is a diocese of the Anglican Church of South America, but it has been moving toward becoming the 40th province of the Anglican Communion.

At a special synod earlier in May, the diocese elected two priests who will be consecrated at Saint Paul’s Cathedral in Valparaíso:

  • The Rev. Enrique Lago Zugadi as Bishop of Concepcion
  • The Rev. Samuel Morrison Munro as Bishop of Valparaiso

The other new diocesan bishops do not require provincial ratification because they are already bishops in the church:

  • The Rt. Rev. Abelino Apeleo, Auxiliary Bishop of Araucanía, will become Bishop of Temuco
  • The Rt. Rev. Hector (Tito) Zavala Muñoz, Bishop of Chile, will become Bishop of Santiago and primate of the new Anglican Province of Chile

The Most Rev. Paul Kwong of Hong Kong, chairman of the Anglican Consultative Council, will soon lead a delegation to Chile to determine if the proposed new province fulfills the requirements to become an Anglican province.
