The Rev. Richard S. Hartley, an administrator and professor at Nashotah House Theological Seminary, died unexpectedly but peacefully during a nap on Nov. 10. He was 48.
Hartley joined the staff of Nashotah House in July 2013 as associate dean for student services, and was affiliate professor of ascetical and pastoral theology.
Ordained in 1993 as a Southern Baptist minister, he became a Congregationalist in 2006 and an Anglican in 2013. He was a candidate for holy orders in 2013, and became a priest in the Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh. He is survived by his wife, Karla, and three children.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Nov. 18 at First Congregational Church in Mukwonago, Wisconsin, and a funeral begins at 1 p.m.
Matthew Townsend is a Halifax-based freelance journalist and volunteer advocate for survivors of sexual misconduct in Anglican settings. He served as editor of the Anglican Journal from 2019 to 2021 and communications missioner for the Anglican Diocese of Quebec from 2019 to 2022. He and his wife recently entered catechism class in the Orthodox Church in America.
