Abp. Welby’s Remarkable Story

The revelation in The Telegraph today that the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, is in fact the son of Anthony Montague Browne, Winston Churchill’s last private secretary, is a remarkable story. Not only does it shine a new light on the mores of Downing Street and the “Establishment” in the Fifties — the decade when the modern usage of that word was coined — it is also, in human terms, extraordinary. When he was appointed as Archbishop, the world — and he himself — learnt that his father, Gavin Welby, had been a sort of confidence trickster and bootlegger whose real name was Weiler. Now we discover, as does the Archbishop, that Welby was not his father at all. His life, with its odd mixture of privilege and deprivation, loss and gain, has been extreme.
