The Rev. Lt. Jamal Scarlett is a military chaplain, endorsed by the Armed Forces and Federal Ministries of the Episcopal Church. He grew up in San Diego and joined the U.S. Navy Reserves in 2014. In 2016, he superseded to active duty. He reported to US Coast Guard Eighth District in August 2019 and currently serves as the Western Rivers Chaplain. Fr. Scarlett is responsible for providing ministry support to 62 units across 22 states and over 2,200 personnel in his area of operation. His past assignments include Commander of Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet (2014-2016), San Diego, and the USS Gerald R. Ford (2016-2019), Norfolk, Va. Chaplain Scarlett is set to report to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., in May 2022.

Lt. Scarlett is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Direct Commission Officer Indoctrination Course (DCOIC). He holds a BA in Communications from California State University, San Marcos, and a MDiv from Fuller Theological Seminary. He is currently pursuing a STM from Nashotah House Theological Seminary. Personal decorations include the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), CG Team Commendation Medal, and a Humanitarian Service Medal. He is married to the former Janice Jane Abria of San Diego, and they have four children: Sydney (18), Nathan (17), Eleanor (3) and Ezra (1). His interests include time with friends, running, theology, military ethics, and African American Episcopal Church history.
