Top 10: Seven theses on the episcopacy

What I want to suggest are a few aspects of episcopal ministry that I believe all of us might do well to consider. These are the kinds of priorities that we should hope for and expect in our bishops, which means that we need to provide them the means to undertake them. I present them in the form of seven theses.

My love won’t find you

I really wanted (more than you know) a new TV; I really want a usable dining room table; I really want a good, stable job. Did I want my children with the same calculus of consumer desire? I hope the answer is no.

Formative literature 1

The Facebook thread: books that changed our lives (or some such). Mine tilt heavily toward the modern and contemporary, but God, in the form of truth, meets us through our loves and fears. He finds us where we are, having arrived himself in advance.

An Augustinian grammar

As Augustine so famously asserted in Sermon 52, if you think you’ve understood something, whatever it is, it’s not God. The maxim might also be applied to Augustine himself.
