Classified: St. John the Evangelist, Newport, R.I.

Saint John the Evangelist Church, an Anglo-Catholic parish in Newport, R.I., is blessed with a rich history, architecturally significant buildings, and a quiet, waterside location in one of the Northeast’s most beautiful cities. Our congregation has experienced recent growth in both size and commitment, completing the first phase of a capital campaign to address important restoration work on our church building and historic organ in advance of the upcoming 150th anniversary of the parish. Under our talented music director, our choir and musical offerings have gone from strength to strength, attracting people from throughout Rhode Island and nearby states, and providing a unique outreach to area youth through The Choir School of Newport County.

We are looking for a priest-in-charge who can deepen our faith and expand our outreach. In the spirit of our founder, Peter Quire, a black man involved with the Underground Railroad, we pray for a PIC whose leadership will inspire and encourage us. We are seeking a candidate with a collaborative leadership style who combines a gift for delegating with the ability to incorporate a range of volunteer efforts.

Our new PIC will enjoy living in a historic rectory a stone’s throw from the water and a short walk from all that Newport, a vibrant resort city and sailing center, has to offer. Please consult our website to learn more about us (saintjohns-newport.org), or contact the Rev. Canon Dena Cleaver-Bartholomew (dena@episcopalri.org) to apply.
