Meditations for Discipleship

Dean Ian Markham commends the latest book by Russell J. Levenson, Jr., an alumnus of Virginia Theological Seminary (and a member of the Living Church Foundation):

I greatly admire the busy rector who manages to write books. I especially admire when the book is good. So, it is with delight that I am able to announce the latest offering from our alum the Rev. Dr. Russell J. Levenson, Jr. (class of ’92), who has written Summer Times.

The book consists of forty meditations: each one starts with a portion of Scripture, then an extended meditation, followed by an invitation to reflect on this or that aspect of our lives, culminating in a prayer. I say ‘culminating’ because the prayers are very rich: the authorship of the prayers includes King Alfred the Great of Wessex, the extended Serenity Prayer from Reinhold Niebuhr, as well as gems from the Book of Common Prayer. His wife Laura clearly walked much of the journey of producing this with Russ and writes a delightful invitation right at the beginning of the book.

All in all, this is one of those special books that can really help with the journey of discipleship. I commend it to you.
