Archbishop Prem Singh, right • Church of North India

The Bishop of Jabalpur, the Rt. Rev. Prem Singh, has been elected as the new moderator of the Church of North India and, by extension, the new primate of the Church’s Anglican province.

Bishop Singh is a well-known ecumenical leader and serves as president of the National Council of Churches in India.

The church’s recent synod also elected Bishop Probal Kanto Dutta of the Diocese of Durgapur as deputy moderator and Jayant Agarwal as the new treasurer. Alwan Masih will continue in his role as general secretary.

Singh succeeds Bishop Pradeep Samantaroy as moderator. The election, which occurred during the synod meeting on Sept. 30-Oct. 3 in New Delhi, began before the Primates’ Meeting in Canterbury. Bishop Samantaroy attended the Canterbury meeting after the synod concluded.
