Be Present in Spirit

Episcopalians need not be present at Washington National Cathedral to celebrate Bishop Michael Curry’s new ministry as 27th presiding bishop. Video of the service will be available live and on demand through the Web, and the Union of Black Episcopalians will sponsor an additional celebration Saturday.

The UBE’s Vigil Celebration and Eucharist begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at the DC Armory, 2001 E. Capital St. S.E. The Episcopal Church will provide video of the service through LiveStream.

“The Vigil Celebration is an opportunity for all to be with Bishop Curry and to pray with him,” said the Rev. Canon Sandye Wilson, former UBE representative and preacher at the vigil. “The model is similar to the vigil that Archbishop Justin Welby conducted prior to his installment in Canterbury.”

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will preside at the Eucharist and Presiding Bishop-elect Curry will celebrate.

On Sunday, the Holy Eucharist with the Installation of the 27th Presiding Bishop and Primate will begin at noon at Washington National Cathedral. Bishop Curry will preach.

Washington National Cathedral will provide a stream of the service, and it will be closed-captioned. A webcast also will be available through the church’s General Convention webpage. On-demand video will be available through a YouTube channel.

The service will reflect the comprehensiveness of the Episcopal tradition and community, and Bishop Curry will preach.
